Pizzico Italiano Restaurant

A fabulous Italian restaurant located in a cute lane way in the heart of Avalon.
At last, a great new top quality restaurant serving authentic Italian cucina. Opened about 9 months ago it has taken a while to get around to eating here. We were not disappointed.
We had a table by the front out onto the laneway and on this typically hot summer night it was perfect. A relaxing vibe as it is off the main street with no passing traffic, it is a beautiful space - polished concrete floor, plaster and exposed brick wall. There are two eating area: an inside space with wide opening doors and an undercover area at the side. The restaurant was pretty full but did not feel crowded.
Service was friendly and had the personal touch. Our waiter was attentive but not pushy.
We choose the special entree - Caprese - Buffalo mozzarella and tomato with basil.Cannot go wrong when the mozzarella is this good.
For mains we had the chicken and the seafood pasta. Both good, with the pasta a clear winner, fresh seafood in a delicious broth.
Magic desserts - the affrogato with a glass of frangelico was superb with the Limonione excellent.

Made In Turin

The best pizza in Avalon - without doubt.

A new pizzeria is now opened in Avalon and thank goodness it is the real deal. This is Italy, this is Turin, yep I could even believe the pizza was Made in Turin. Clean and shiny the foyer of the shop is Turin themed - a cute Fiat clock, pictures of Turin landmarks, happy Torino residents .

Have just found out that the owners used to run the popular Vince's Pizza Bar in Avalon 20 years ago - so welcome back. The pizza that I had was the best I have tasted in a long long time. And I have been eating a lot lately.

The most important element in a good pizza is the crust, this one was Naples-thick, chewy and crispy at the same time (if that is possible). Also the topping on the pizza I ordered, the Torinese, had me wishing I had ordered two, beautifully rustic fresh ingredients, and importantly not too much cheese. The drizzled pattern of Aioli and sesame seeds was a superb touch. The 13" size was perfect for a meal for two.

Located on Old Barrenjoey Rd, handily near the bottle shop and across the road from that new video shop. Combine these three - pizza, vino and a Sophia Loren movie for a perfect night in. I will definitely be back to try out the whole menu. I placed my order and it was ready for pickup in 15 minutes. On time and with very friendly service. What more could you want. Buon appetito!

Cost for 2: $19.50

Rating: A Fiat 500, of course.

Pizzeria e Cucina

A fine Italian Italian restaurant. It is on the main drag in Newport Beach and is large and has a friendly feel. Lots of families with children and a few hipsters at the bar. The wait staff are always welcoming and the prices very reasonable for the large serves.

We had the garlic pizza bread - soft with a perfecto base - plenty of garlic (lucky I have the day off tomorrow). There are lots of choices for pizza or mains but we decided to go pasta tonight.

For mains Garganelle - whole egg Garganelle pasta with prosciutto, peas, potato and truffle cream. This dish was the highlight of the night - creamy and different.

Gnocchi guance di bue - potato dumplings in ox cheeks with red wine and vegetables.

For Dolci the Tiramisu is a standout.

Rating: Fiat 500 Cost for 2 with wine, main and dessert: $85

Revisted here in February 2015 with a party of 5: Had an early 5.30pm sitting as one of our party had to go out later, there were lots of families with kids here at this time, and again the wait staff were friendly and helpful. We ordered the garlic pizza bread to start, while we decided on our order.

We went for 3 pizzas and a pasta dish, this turned out to be the perfect amount. Ventre pizza was the standout, pear and pork belly, second best was the Quattro stagione (procuitto and cheese etc, and the special pizza was the calamari. We also had the gnocci gorgonza and walnut which is super creamy and tasty. Not sure I could eat this on my own but we all shared. No dessert today and the bill was $120. Perfect!

Avalon Brasserie

Well Avalon has a new first class restaurant, serving stylish Italian fare in a casual environment.

Located at the Paris end of Avalon, this part of town has been revitalised by the important relocation of the newsagent a few doors up. Entry is through a large sliding glass door into the deep space of a modern office-like room. Sheer curtained windows on the left and the bar and kitchen on the right, we are greeted by a friendly head waiter who is busier than a one-armed taxidriver with the crabs. This Saturday night is fully booked for two sittings so make sure you call ahead to make a reservation. We arrive a fashionable few minutes late for our 8pm sitting and have to wait about 15 minutes while an earlier couple pay and linger. The bar has an excellent selection of mock and cocktails while the blender makes a hell of a noise if you are perched next to it. The French Martini was a cool way to start the night.

The restaurant seats about 30-40 and there are a number of single tables near the window, spaced just so you do not have to put up with your neighbours conversation. The noise level, while not whisper quiet is very acceptable and adds to the lively atmosphere of the room. The music is tweaked up at the end of the night as the room empties.

The service is superb. These guys are professional and friendly. This was only their third night and I was apprehensive in case they had not got their act together -but they have. The little touches make for good service:your water glass is refilled, the table is swept between entree and main.

Best of all the food is divine.

ENTREE: Char grilled king prawns, with roasted cherry tomatoes, choizo and roasted almonds was a perfect starter. This came very quickly and it was all very fresh. Perfectly done, hot and whet my appetite for more.

MAIN: Braciolette Napoletana -rolled veal filled with pine nuts, parsley, raisins and parmesan. Finished with tomato concasse. Complex and sweet tasting with the raisins and pine nuts. The thin slivers of veal beautifully done.

SIDE: Rocket salad with pear and roasted walnuts, with balsamic reduction.

MAIN: Stezzatino di agniello - slow cooked lamb with baby peas finished off with parmesan eggs. The sauce was one Manu Fiedel would kill for. Generous chunky lamb portions that melted in the mouth.

DESSERT: Canolli with sour cherries. A signature italian dessert. Crispy crust encasing a creamy not-too-sweet centre. Perfecto.

DESSERT: Semifreddo. Loved this classic with toffee, nougat and almonds inside a creamy ice-cream like dessert.

The wine list is extensive and the by the glass selections a good choice. Overall impressed by the reasonable price.

Cost for two (including wine, cocktail, beer, entree, main and dessert was $137.
